Distribution quantitative de la macrofaune benthique du peuplement des cailloutis dans le détroit du Pas de Calais (Manche orientale, France) ArchiMer
Migne, A; Davoult, D.
Because of strong tidal currents, the bottom of the Dover Strait consists of coarse sediment which is colonized by a pebble community. A quantitative study, based on 0.1 m(2) quadrat samples taken by divers, was conducted on this community to establish the richness of benthic macrofauna (in terms of biomass and diversity) and to provide conclusive data on global community structure (spatial and temporal heterogeneity, trophic structure). Eight samples were taken between June 1992 and June 1993, eight replicates being taken on each sampling visit. One hundred and one species were identified, in 10 zoological groups, and a mean biomass of 281 g.m(-2) (ash free dry weight) was calculated. The Shannon diversity index was low (H' = 1.24) because of the strong...

Rosa,Ricardo S; Rosa,Ierecê L; Rocha,Luiz A.
A survey of the tidal pool fish community was carried out between february/1987 and january/1988, at Cabo Branco Beach, João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil. Specimens were collected monthly at low tide, using rotenone. A total of 3143 specimens was obtained. The most speciose families were Ophichthidae (14% of the total number of species), Mugilidae (11%) and Muraenidae (9%), and the most representative ones in number of individuais were Gobiidae (48%), Pomacentridae (13%) and Labrisomidae (10%). The main resident species were Bathygobius soporator (Valenciennes, 1837) and Abudefduf saxalilis (Linnaeus, 1758). The presence of a large number of juveniles in the pools indicated the importance of the studied sites as nursery áreas for several fish species.

Diversite de populations microbiennes thermophiles d'une cheminée hydrothermale océanique profonde : cultures d'enrichissement en bioréacteur et isolement d'espèces nouvelles ArchiMer
Postec, Anne.
To explore the microbial diversity at deep sea vents, molecular techniques based on the analysis of the gene coding the 16S ribosomal RNA permitted to highlight a large archaeal and bacterial diversity. Nevertheless, the diversity of the hydrothermal microorganisms cultivated to date remains much lower than the diversity described with molecular tools. Innovative methods should therefore be used in order to cultivate new microorganisms, and also determine their metabolic properties and their potential role in the ecosystem. That was the purpose of this study: a bioreactor gas-lift was used to perform enrichment cultures in continuous, during 50 days, in thermophilic (60°C) and hyperthermophilic (90°C) conditions. A hydrothermal chimney sample (Rainbow...

Diversité et différentiation génétique chez l'huître plate européenne : de la population à l'individu (Actes) ArchiMer
Boudry, Pierre; Launey, Sophie; Diaz-almela, A.; Naciri-graven, Yamama; Ledu, Christophe; Mira, S.; Taris, Nicolas; Bonhomme, Francois; Lapegue, Sylvie.
PCR-based DNA markers enable the study of diversity and differentiation of marine organisms at different stages of their life cycle. Our study of European fiat oyster (Ostrea edulis) populations aimed to describe their spatial and temporal dynamics. First, we analyzed adults sampled over the natural range of the species. An Atlantic/Mediterranean differentiation pattern was observed. Similar patterns of variation were found using allozymes, microsatellites and mitochondrial DNA, aIl which support an isolation by distance model. High variability was observed in the range of diversity between populations using a mitochondrial marker, a reflection of small effective population sizes in sorne locations. A 10fold quantitative difference was observed in Fst,...

Diversity and abundance of litter frogs at altitudinal sites at Serra do Japi, southeastern Brazil Zoologia
Giaretta,Ariovaldo Antonio; Sawaya,Ricardo J.; Machado,Glauco; Araújo,Márcio S.; Facure,Kátia G.; Medeiros,Hermes F. de; Nunes,Renato.
It was sampled the litter frogs at altitudinal sites of a semideciduous mesophytic forest located at Sena do Japi (Jundiaí, São Paulo, 23º17'S, 47º00'W, 800-1300m altitude, 1500mm rain/year). Forty two plots of 8x8m were sampled in the dry/cold season of 1995: 21 at a Higher Site (HS) (1000m) and 21 at a Lower Site (LS) (850m). The plots were evenly located near, mid-distance, and far from the stream-bed. It was found a total of five species, three at each site. Eleutherodactylus guentheri comprised 83% of the individuals at HS and E. juipoca 67% at LS. The density of individuals was higher at HS and near the stream. The greater density at HS may be due to greater humidity there, provided by mist. The frogs may aggregate in wetter places (stream edges) in...

Diversity and habitat preference of aquatic insects along the longitudinal gradient of the Macaé River basin, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil BJB
BAPTISTA,D. F.; BUSS,D. F.; DORVILLÉ,L. F. M.; NESSIMIAN,J. L..
Diversity and habitat preference of macroinvertebrates were studied in Macaé River basin, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, along its longitudinal gradient. We selected stream reaches corresponding to 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th orders. A Surber sampler was used to collect four macroinvertebrates samples of each substrate (sand, litter in pool areas, stones, and litter in riffle areas) during the three sampling periods, defined based on the rain regime: April (end of the rainy season), July (dry season), and October (beginning of the rainy season). We identified 46,431 specimens corresponding to 117 taxa. Analysis of diversity numbers (both for family or genus level) indicated that all insect taxonomic orders had higher numbers on 2nd order stream reach, except...

Diversity and habitat use by snakes and lizards in coastal environments of southernmost Brazil Biota Neotropica
Santos,Maurício Beux dos; Oliveira,Mauro Cesar Lamim Martins de; Tozetti,Alexandro Marques.
This study examined species composition differences among snake and lizard assemblages from coastal dunes and restinga habitats in southernmost Brazil. Animals were collected between April 2009 and March 2010 using pitfall traps, artificial shelters, and time-constrained searches in grasslands areas susceptible to flooding. Species richness was higher in the restinga, but lower than the observed in other Brazilian biomes, possibly associated with more unstable microclimate conditions and low habitat complexity (vertical and horizontal distribution of the vegetation) in this habitat. This hypothesis is supported by the fact that the most abundant species of both snakes and lizards have fossorial habits. The assemblage of snakes is apparently mainly...

Diversity and stability of an estuarine trophic network ArchiMer
Lobry, Jeremy; David, V; Pasquaud, S; Lepage, M; Sautour, B; Rochard, E.
Estuarine areas provide highly valuable ecosystem benefits for human populations, despite being under intense demographic, economic and ecological pressures. Hence, an understanding of the structure and function of estuarine ecosystems is essential for understanding the persistence and stability of these ecosystems and their response to perturbations. This study synthesises available data and knowledge about the Gironde estuary (SW France) in a mass-balanced trophic model to illustrate potential key patterns in the functioning of the estuarine ecosystem and key elements of its stability. In order to evaluate the total direct and indirect impact on the whole community of the 2 main sources of anthropogenic perturbations in the estuarine area, mortalities...

Diversity and stability of fishes (Teleostei) in a temporary river of the Brazilian semiarid region Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Medeiros,Elvio S.F.; Maltchik,Leonardo.
The effects of hydrological disturbances by flooding and drought on the diversity and stability in a temporary river fish community in the Brazilian semiarid region were analyzed over the 1996 hydrological cycle. Twelve collections of fishes were made during the wet and dry phases, and 789 individuals of 16 species were collected. Diversity was measured using Simpson's Index (S) and community stability was analyzed by the variation in abundance using Kendall's W concordance test. Fish diversity in the Taperoá river was subjected to hydrological disturbances by flooding and drought. During the wet phase the diversity was higher (S = 0.855) than during the dry phase (S = 0.771). The community was considered stable during the whole annual hydrological cycle...

Diversity and three-dimensional structures of the alpha Mcr of the methanogenic Archaea from the anoxic region of Tucuruí Lake, in Eastern Brazilian Amazonia Genet. Mol. Biol.
Santana,Priscila Bessa; Ghilardi Junior,Rubens; Alves,Claudio Nahum; Silva,Jeronimo Lameira; McCulloch,John Anthony; Schneider,Maria Paula Cruz; Silva,Artur da Costa da.
Methanogenic archaeans are organisms of considerable ecological and biotechnological interest that produce methane through a restricted metabolic pathway, which culminates in the reaction catalyzed by the Methyl-coenzyme M reductase (Mcr) enzyme, and results in the release of methane. Using a metagenomic approach, the gene of the a subunit of mcr (mcrα) was isolated from sediment sample from an anoxic zone, rich in decomposing organic material, obtained from the Tucuruí hydroelectric dam reservoir in eastern Brazilian Amazonia. The partial nucleotide sequences obtained were 83 to 95% similar to those available in databases, indicating a low diversity of archaeans in the reservoir. Two orders were identified -the Methanomicrobiales, and a unique Operational...
